What does social justice look like? It’s not entitled millionaires protesting our national anthem while knowing that it will only earn them bigger Nike contracts while bowing their heads to Communist China.
It’s the World Tennis Association actually defying threats from the Communist regime over the welfare of one of its players.
The Women’s Tennis Association has warned it could pull tournaments from China as early as next year if verifiable proof of the safety of missing player Peng Shuai is not provided soon.
Peng, a two-time grand slam doubles champion, has not been seen since making sexual assault allegations against a former senior Chinese Communist Party official on November 2.
WTA chief executive and chairman Steve Simon responded soon afterwards by saying the post had only heightened his fears for Peng’s safety.
“The WTA and the rest of the world need independent and verifiable proof that she is safe. I have repeatedly tried to reach her via numerous forms of communication, to no avail,” Simon said in a statement.
“Peng Shuai must be allowed to speak freely, without coercion or intimidation from any source. Her allegation of sexual assault must be respected, investigated with full transparency and without censorship.”
Sources with knowledge of the delicate discussions between the WTA and the Chinese Tennis Association told the Herald and The Age the game’s governing body has threatened to take the extreme measure of pulling all tournaments from China – costing the game hundreds of millions in revenue – if evidence of Peng’s wellbeing is not provided.
The WTA is set to stage 10 tournaments in China in 2022.
“Should we find that what we are asking for cannot happen or will not happen, we are prepared to no longer do business within the region and move forward,” Simon told TIME at the WTA Finals in Mexico.
There’s no doubt a lot of money at stake here, but the WTA is taking a principled position. Meanwhile, the NBA’s principled position is that players are encouraged to hate America, but that China may not be criticized.
Several fans were escorted out of NBA preseason games this week after holding up signs and voicing support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong as the league grapples with the backlash over its statements in support of China.
At least three fans at games in Philadelphia and Washington, DC, reported being removed from the arenas, while others said officials confiscated their “Free Hong Kong” signs.
After the NBA issued a statement saying that comments by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey, who voiced support for the protesters in a now-deleted tweet, “deeply offended many of our friends and fans in China,”
The social justice sports cartel in America is a pathetic sham in which Nike, which makes sweatshop shoes, hands out huge contracts to players who bash America on ESPN, which is owned by Disney, and kowtows to the Communist regime.
The WTA shows what social justice actually looks like. It’s standing up to tyranny even when you’re at risk of losing money, not out of some abstract virtue signaling, but to protect one of your own players.
