Contrary to universally accepted usage, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders and the rest are not “progressives,” and we must stop calling them that. To continue to do so is misleading and dangerous.
One of the most important aspects of combating the Left’s assault on freedom and rationality itself is to counter its manipulation of language. “Gender-affirming care” isn’t gender-affirming care, it’s the mutilation of healthy people in the pursuit of delusions. “Book-banning” isn’t a resurgence of fascist thought control, it’s the cleansing of our libraries and schools from the pornography and propaganda with which Leftists have filled them. Abortion isn’t “women’s healthcare,” it’s the murder of a child. And behind all of the Left’s language-bending is the fundamental lie that Leftists are “progressives.”
This one has become so generally accepted in American culture today that the likes of AOC and Bernie are regularly called “progressives” even by their opponents. This is not simply the benign name of a political faction. It implies that those who bear the name are on the right side of a grand progression of history. Human experience, the “progressives” contend, is moving inexorably toward an inevitable outcome. History, they say, is a science, and that science demonstrates that the world is moving toward a messianic age of earthly justice, in which everyone gives according to his or her or xis ability, and receives according to his or her or xis needs.
Does that sound familiar? It should. It’s Marxism. It was the dyspeptic misanthrope Karl Marx who proclaimed that he had cracked the code and discerned the riddles of history, and could now declare with scientific certainty that history was moving toward socialism and there was nothing anyone could do to prevent it. The workers’ paradise was an inevitable fact. Reactionaries may try to obstruct it, but they would ultimately fail.
This idea of an inevitable progression of human history toward peace, justice and equality became a staple of Marxist thought. Leon Trotsky believed it with such unshakable certainty that even when Stalin had outmaneuvered him and declared him an enemy of the Soviet state, Trotsky continued blandly in his assurance that since he was on the right side of history, he would eventually prevail. It took the axe of a Stalinist in Mexico, to which Trotsky had fled to await history’s vindication, in Trotsky’s skull to demonstrate once and for all that history is not always so easily predictable and does not operate according to scientific rules.
In America today, when Leftist politicians call themselves “progressives,” they are claiming the inevitability of history for themselves. The Donald Trumps and Ron DeSantises of the world may try to stand in their way, but ultimately socialist authoritarianism will prevail no matter what they do. Even if we’re not living in rental pods and eating bugs by 2030, it’s going to happen eventually. The “progressives” are as certain of it as Trotsky ever was, and in America at this time, there is no Stalinist axe-man in sight. That is, no one is challenging them from the Left, and patriots are, despite the relentless demonization of them by the Biden regime, peaceful and law-abiding. When patriots call these Leftist apparatchiks “progressives,” they’re unwittingly endorsing the entire world view of an inexorable progression of history. We must throw off this usage and refuse to accept the Leftist mindset.
This is imperative for many reasons. One is that if we stop calling them “progressives,” we will stop tacitly acknowledging the inevitability of their victory. We will be able to be clearer in enunciating the opposing point of view, which is the Judeo-Christian understanding that the human race is not progressing toward anything, and will continue to suffer wars and injustices until the actual messianic age, which will not be ushered in by human effort. Accordingly, government schemes that Leftists claim will bring about the justice and equality that has been so sorely lacking in human experience can be opposed for the forays into authoritarianism and totalitarianism that they are, without anyone being bamboozled into thinking that they represent actual “progress” toward an earthly paradise. There will be no earthly paradise. The Left’s idolatry of political action doesn’t actually offer any solutions to our problems, but will only make them worse and create new ones as well.
Instead of calling them “progressives,” then, patriots should call them what they are: statists, enemies of freedom, believers in all-encompassing government control, foes of the freedom of speech, foes of the freedom of religion, advocates of government coercion, and the like. Calling things by their right names, after decades of Leftists twisting words in order to fool people into supporting them, will go a long way toward restoring our nation to societal health.

I absolutely agree. In fact, Marxism/Marxists is almost a polite term nowadays. When I lose my temper I call them communists, Bolsheviks, etc. It is all the same thing, it is simply a matter of where they happen to rest on the Socialism continuum. I have read that the goal of Socialism is always communism anyway. And while we are talking about the power of language in political discourse (a tactic that the communists learned the power of a long, long time ago, and usually they do not ‘miss a trick’ to properly employ it), let me mention my own ‘pet peeve’. Writers and television commentators are so-called ‘opinion makers’. O.K., conservative writers/television commentators, let’s start making some opinions. STOP CALLING THE LEFTIST MEDIA THE INNOCUOUS TERM, ‘MAIN STREAM MEDIA’! There is NOTHING ‘MAIN STREAM’ about these people! They are extremists! Come on folks, THINK, come up with a standard term, HUDDLE TOGETHER, and decide upon another appropriate common name, and begin to use it in unison! LET’S NAIL THESE PEOPLE so that the public knows EXACTLY who we are talking about when we use this term.
They are progressives (certainly not “liberals”) – progressing from democrats to socialists and eventually Marxist or Fascist. That is why they are called “progressives.”
As far as Leftist Media, I call them Marxist Media. But you are correct, they certainly are no longer “Mainstream Media” in a sense.
The year 1919 was the end of the ‘First Progressive Age.’ 1919 -1920 was an awful time in the U.S. The soldiers brought home the “Spanish flu,” and the economy was shattered. Misery gripped the nation for a few years.
As a result, the 1st progressives dumped the name almost overnight, but, after the Palmer Raids (1919), the networks of radical leftists picked up the term and used it as a kind of code word or euphemism to identify each another.

The same mislabeling occurs with respect to the terms “radical Islam,” “radical Muslim,” and “radical mosque.” It is Islam itself that is “radical,” with its foundational tenet being the commandment to all Muslims to employ any and all means available to ensure that Islam dominates the entire globe. Muslims labeled “radical” are merely orthodox adherents of Islam, who follow its precepts to the letter, including the mandate to wage war against non-Muslims.and polities that are not Shari’a-based. They are not ” radical.” To call them such suggests, falsely, that there is a religiously approved and mainstream “moderate” Islam that the radicals have “,hijacked.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

That’s precisely what Christianity represents too. The Dark and Middle Ages were caused by Christianity. Christianity does not lead to freedom, liberty, and capitalism, it leads to the tyranny of theocracy.

Progressive is a one word oxymoron; progressives are not progressive. They believe in an all powerful government so the rest of us can be ruled efficiently. Although they will deny it, the sort of government they envision has only one result and we have seen it in the past. Nazi Germany was a prime example of what can happen if the progressives get what they want. The fact that they tend to believe China is the sort of government the world needs proves that the eventual outcome of their agenda is anything but progressive.
I prefer the term “Regressives” or “Regressive” if talking about an individual, as the Marxism they profess was tried and failed miserably in the 20th Century with Stalin, Hilter, Mao and Castro.

Yes. The left should definitely not be referred to as ‘progressives’ or ‘liberals’. Based on what they say and do, one could call them ‘political and economic predators’. In primary terms, they are nihilists who have consciously abandoned facts, reality, and all values. They deserve our complete contempt.
The term “progressive” is used to placate uncertain minds about these sociopaths’ hidden agenda. After all, who would be against “progress”? Progress gave us life-saving antibiotics, computers, modes of transportation, equal rights for men and women, and countless other inventions that benefit us.
Humanity has achieved so much in the last century. Where else is there to go? Ah yes – destroy what we have and tell people it’s for their own good. The length these clowns go to in order to make us drink the Kook-aid is sickening – “gender affirming”, “white privilege”, “safe spaces”, etc.
Robert, why not call them what they actually are, “lawless.” The fact we have right wing and left wing should make one consider the question: Right of what? Left of What? The reality is they are both right and left of the law, ie, God’s law and even the Constitution.
Both parties support unconstitutional spending on the things they like. Both parties demonstrate they don’t care about the people’s rights and will pass laws against our Constitution and allow lawlessness when it is someone in their party.
I could go on and on, but “leftist” is a political term that really doesn’t communicate what is going on. Lawless should be applied to both Republicans and Democrats the very moment they even speak in support of unlawful things.
I use “progressives” in the sense it was used in the USSR, my home country: Western totalitarian fellow-travelers. They are not really “Marxists” – some perhaps did not even read Marx, let alone following his scripture, The Manifesto, Das Kapital, etc. Progressives can also readily switch between what is traditionally called “leftist” (communist-like) and “rightist” (Nazi-like), because these are not really two poles of a linear dimension, but more of a circle, converging on totalitarianism (and usually antisemitism) – generally statism and abolishing personal freedoms. The flavor – Marxian beard or Hitlerian moustache – is not that important. Of course, the beard has not been accorded proper disgust yet, in contrast to the moustache – probably mostly because the latter was defeated in a bloody war, while the beard was left untouched.

Sorry, but your theory of western history is passé to say the least. Yes, “progressives” are statists, but “the Dark Ages” were NOT caused by Christianity. To the extent that Europe became “dark,” it was caused by hundreds of years of Islam’s war on the west. Christians retreated into walled cities in which the church became the center of all knowledge.
The Mediterranean Sea was the scene of many naval battles for hundreds of years, and various Muslim rulers won those wars and battles until the Battle of Lepanto (1571). Lepanto, however, was only the beginning of the Christian resurgence because the Muslims fought on for centuries. So, to the contrary, the medieval Christian churches were the ‘thousand points of light for the emerging Renaissance of Europe.
In the late 70’s, archeologists found the remains of many medieval ships of European origin. These discoveries negated the historians’ traditional theories about the cause of the so-called “dark ages.” In short, Muslim navies looted and sank commercial vessels on the Mediterranean by the thousands, and that shut down sea-going trade on the Mediterranean for hundreds of years.

In addition to everything else that’s been written here, we might also look at it just in terms of the fact that “progressive” implies that something new is being sought, when, in fact, the end-game of the progressive (total control of all by the state) is the oldest, most shopworn, most out-dated, yes, the most REGRESSIVE political philosophy imaginable. What is new (historically speaking) is the idea of individual freedom, made possible by and enshrined within the founding documents of the U.S.A. The notion of individual autonomy is truly progressive – although we can’t use that word because the left has destroyed it, just as they’ve destroyed the word “liberal”.
I call the Progressives crazy and evil. They have lost their minds and their souls. The evidence is clear. They will do anything to have complete power over other people and of the states and our country. They have no sense of morality, and are willing to destroy our children with their indoctrination, promotion of transgenderism, and efforts to debase children’s sexuality. They are not content to turn our people into immoral, dishonest, greedy, unpatriotic, and lazy failures–they want to destroy Christianity and our Constitution. Our country is doomed if we fail to overpower them and bring our country, our freedom, and our people back to Christ.
I am a retired airline pilot. Many years ago on a Moscow layover, in the spirit of “know thy enemy,” I wanted to buy a copy of the Communist Manifesto. I asked the hotel desk clerk where I could find the Communist bookstore. He said there was none. But that I could find what I was looking for at the “Progressive Bookstore.” Know thy enemy.
C.S. Lewis had it right when he wrote: “We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.”
Democrats, with the help of their left-media propagandists, have perfected the “messaging” part of politics. Inspired by Josef Goebbels, Democrat politicians, leftwing activists and left-media demonstrate the belief that “lies told repeatedly and over a long enough period, become truth”. Sadly, the masses seem too intellectually weak to recognize and reject the leftwing lies.
Conservatives/GOP need to become more aggressive about countering Democrat/leftwing lies and propaganda with actual truth. As with the falsely named “American Rescue Plan” and “Inflation Reduction Act”, Democrats successfully execute their destructive Marxist ideology with positive marketing that repeats the lies until they become “truth” in the minds of the compliant masses..
Sadly, conservatives and the GOP allow it to happen.
Equally fallacious is the notion that modern Democrat politicians and their policies are “liberal” or “democratic”. More accurate descriptions are “autocratic” and “fascist”. It is certainly not liberal or democratic for our government and elected leaders to lie and fear-monger the effects of a virus in order to mandate useless mask-wearing; require injections of experimental mRNA drugs – or fire you for failing to do so; censor different opinions or news stories that contradict the government’s messages; prevent people from attending religious services or family gatherings; keep children out of school; and force private businesses to close. Didn’t we fight wars to prevent the deprivation of basic human rights and personal freedoms? Doesn’t the Nuremberg Code prevent the coerced or forced injections of experimental drugs?
And while we’re at it, has anyone in a position of influence asked the “Democrats” what they mean by “fundamentally transforming the USA”? A good place to start would be for members of the GOP to ask the question, “transform the USA into what?” Sadly, we know, based on leftwing ideology, the answer is “a 3rd world Marxist crap-heap where the leftwing elite rule and the masses beg for basics”. Forcing the leftwing to admit that could go a long way toward preventing that horrendous outcome.
Bottom Line: Conservatives and other real Americans need to bring an end to the leftwing lies and propaganda that are turning this once great country into a sheep-filled sewer.
