AG Letitia James wants to replace Governor Cuomo, but she made it clear that she’s not about to prosecute him.
There’s plenty to charge Cuomo with just for his abuses during the pandemic, ranging from the mass deaths of nursing home patients to selectively targeting a minority group and blaming them for the pandemic, but much of the state’s political establishment is complicit in that.
Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned because he was facing the threat of more than just New York Times editorials. But Spitzer had fallen afoul of the law.
Cuomo is playing hardball, but he has no reason not to.
Right now he’s governor. If he resigns, he’s a disgraced ex-governor. There’s no percentage in that. And, as he’s seen in Virginia, a governor and his second banana who defy a scandal and stick around will eventually win back the support of the party and the media.
As long as Cuomo is hanging on to black voters, which he still is, he’s got good odds of surviving a primary challenge from the AOC crowd.
And once he does that, he knows the party will come around.
