In a post-Iowa piece, I noted the strange role of the mosque caucuses.
In Iowa, 5 mosques hosted caucuses as “satellite sites” meant as “safe spaces” for Muslims. Muslims in Iowa don’t need a safe space. No one is going to be assaulting them at Democrat caucuses. But holding these satellite caucuses in mosques gives Islamic organizations spaces under their control.
The first site of the Iowa satellite caucus was the Muslim Community Organization, also known as Masjid An-Noor, where there was widespread support for Bernie Sanders.
Imam Jaaphar Abdul Hamed of the mosque endorsed Bernie Sanders and welcomed Rep. Ilhan Omar, an Islamist and anti-Semitic Sanders backer. And 99% of the mosque caucus, caucused for Bernie Sanders.
That gave Bernie 9 delegates.
Now the extremely dubious satellite caucuses are at the heart of the debate over the current totals in Iowa.
Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator who is national co-chairwoman for Sanders’s campaign, said she is suspicious of the timing of Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez’s call for a recanvass on Thursday, three days after the botched rollout of the Iowa caucus results.
Turner, 52, also expressed frustration with people doubting the results from so-called “satellite caucuses” that allowed people to caucus who could not attend a 7 p.m. meeting. Sanders beat his competition in those contests, leaving some to doubt the results. Turner claimed Sanders won those caucuses because they contained more diverse voters.
“Now, they want to question the satellite, and it’s my understanding that Mr. Buttigieg’s campaign is calling foul on the satellites, somebody that’s polling about 0% in the black community, Hispanic community, communities of color, wants to question the satellite caucuses that did allow people who work shift jobs to be able to have an opportunity to have their voices heard,” Turner explained.
The satellite caucuses are fraud central. Even in my very brief survey, I noted bogus information. The real story would be much worse. If you insist on having caucuses, then have them. Satellite caucuses are making a process that’s already a joke, into an even bigger joke. They’re basically ‘insert fraud’ here stations.
