I like 99-cent stores. Growing up, money was always tight and with the disappearance of the old New York City budget department stores like Alexander’s and Mays (not to mention Woolworth’s), they filled a vital retail niche. California’s 99-cent stores were even better than their New York counterparts like Jack’s even if their closeout stores were inferior.
The pandemic wrecked 99-cent stores quickly enough. So did the inflation. But the one thing I spotted repeatedly at dollar stores was the casual shoplifting. California had led the way in effectively legalizing shoplifting.
And while inflation and the general impact of Pandenomics and Bidenomics get some of the blame, no one is talking much about theft.
The shutdown of the 99 Cent Only Stores chain is getting a lot of attention, but the missing link here is that it’s a chain that was founded in LA, with a lot of stores in California where shoplifting is really not a crime anymore if you steal under a certain amount.
99 cent stores are a perfect target.
The 99 Cent Only Stores people mentioned theft as one of the reasons for the shutdown. Combined with insane labor costs, much of the credit for the shutdown really ought to go to California Democrats.
You can have legalized shoplifting or discount stores. But you can’t have both.

The demise of the Ninety Nine Cent stores is a massive crime that the California State government and politicians
have committed. They are the direct cause of the closing of the 99 Cent Stores because they refuse to enforce the law against rampant crime and a deluge of illegal aliens.
California, San Francisco, Los Angeles, etc.etc..etc. have become as decrepit and corrupt as Sodom and Gomorrah.
Hordes of Illegal aliens and criminals are such a positive addition to to society …. Right ?

I’ve always wondered why people would shoplift at 99 cents stores and dollar stores. Why not rob places with better and more expensive stuff? I mean, seriously. Who wants to go to jail for stealing something that only costs a buck? Fucking retards. I talk to the employees at those stores and they’re perplexed, too.
Not that anybody goes to jail in California for theft. Good to know if I ever decide to become a thief, I guess.

I went into one of those dollar stores once or twice when family visited. I never thought of the economics from the store point of view before though. Nice analysis by Daniel. They probably get overstock of stuff that’s cheap already.

This is what happens when you have more thieves than business owners and honest workers, or rigged elections for socialists (a socioeconomic system based on thievery). Thievery is legalized.
Most of the socialists have ‘jobs’ in politics, bureaucracy, political and/or bureaucratic consulting, community organization, or non-profits. Nothing to shoplift or rob there, no goods and the money is electronic.
I’ve only been to a dollar type store once, with a friend (everything I saw in that one was made in prc) but there was a Woolworth’s at North Dekalb Mall in Decatur in the 70s and early 80s. They had an old school soda fountain in the store. The only I know of that outlasted it, was Fountain Drugs, east of downtown Atlanta. I got to see a lot of cool things that just aren’t there anymore.
