The U.S. military really needs to rethink the recruitment of foreign nationals. Especially from Mainland China.
Last week I noted the disturbing number of arrests of Chinese personnel in the US Navy for selling secrets to China.
This latest episode involves the US Army.
Three people, including two active-duty JBLM soldiers, were arrested following federal grand jury indictments in Oregon and Washington, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
The DOJ reported that Jian Zhao and Li Tian, both stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, along with former soldier Ruoyu Duan, face serious charges related to espionage and bribery.
The DOJ said in Washington, Zhao is accused of conspiring since July 2024 to leak national defense information to individuals in China. The DOJ also noted that Zhao allegedly negotiated the sale of classified hard drives, marked “SECRET” and “TOP SECRET,” and received at least $10,000 in exchange.
Zhao is also accused of conspiring to sell a stolen encryption-capable computer and sensitive military documents, including information on the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and U.S. military readiness “in the event of a conflict with the People’s Republic of China.”
There are lots of statements about how we’re not going to tolerate this anymore, but what are we going to do about it?
“While bribery and corruption have thrived under China’s Communist Party, this behavior cannot be tolerated with our service members who are entrusted with sensitive military information, including national defense information,” wrote FBI Director Kash Patel.
This is a recruitment problem.
The military has been recruiting foreign nationals who are non-citizens don’t even speak English in some cases. Are we really surprised at the outcome here?
Take this video of a recruitment office posted by Jennifer Zheng.
Can you believe this is a US NAVY Recruiting Office in Alhambra, CA? EVERY recruiter here is Chinese, as well as all the people coming to enlist. The working language here is also Chinese.
The video was filmed by a Chinese language YouTuber, and the US NAVY recruiter who took… pic.twitter.com/GeP7xZgJQL

You can’t maintain national security under such conditions.
Foreign nationals do not belong in our military. They have no loyalty to our country, no reason to defend us, and every reason to join our military for easy access to our defense information to pass along for their home nation’s advantage.
They cannot be convicted of treason or sedition because, but definition, they have no loyalty to the USA.
Why would we ever do this? What’s in it for us?
Could use AI to vet them.
Reminds me of the American Embassy Built by Russia all rigged with Bugging Devices
Everybody does that.
When the SU had new embassy built in Ottawa the British bugged it to a fare thee well, then the Russian moved in and covered all the bugs, proving that British Intelligence was still well and truly penetrated.
When the PRC built a new embassy in Canberra the Australian Intelligence services bugged it to a fare thee well and quite happily listened in on everything until a dipstick journalist decided to get some cheap cred by reporting it.
Those are the two I know of specifically in Western countries, so it would be a near certainty that everybody does it.
Kind of reminds me when the Russians built the American Embassy which was full of Bugging Devices
Pollard got a life sentence, was tortured and in a solitary confinement for years, before being finally released after serving 30 years, for passing information on the Arab states to Israel, a friendly state. Nobody else got the same treatment for spying for the enemies – not for spying for China, not for spying for Iran.
It’s telling.
It’s time to rethink military recruitment.
And of course, IMMIGRATION policy.
It’s probably just his misunderstanding, but the young man speaking from 1:32-2:17 is mistaken if he thinks there is still an aviation fire control specialty. That was the AQ rating. It was combined into the AT rating back in 1991. If you’re an AT, you might get training in radar maintenance (not observation) but you also could be involved with comm/nav and asw specialties. Depends on the level of maintenance you do and what commands you are assigned to. Of course, it could just be him repeating the misinformation given by a recruiter – they do that quite well in all languages. Lol.
The whole thing is both scary and wrong. A US Navy recruiting command speaking a foreign language exclusively (especially the language of an enemy). The Navy does not do that, at least not when I was in. English is now the official language of the US so this sort of stupidity should come to a screeching halt. But it will no doubt take a while, California is a stupid state.
I hope someone at the Pentagon has seen this and steps have been taken to end an obvious source of spies and that every single person recruited here is thoroughly vetted and, even if retained, not allowed to work in areas that require secret clearance (like aviation electronics).
The video was filmed secretly or it’s a recruitment video? How high ranking were these soldiers who had access tobtop secret hard drives?
