I’m not sure if this counts as a political attack or cannibalism.
But there was always speculation over when Warren and Sanders would turn on each other. This would seem like the opportune moment for Warren to reinvent herself by going after Bernie. But she’s far too weak to do so. The Sanders campaign is riding high and hunting Warren.
Sanders’ campaign has begun stealthily attacking Warren as a candidate of the upper crust who could not expand the Democratic base in a general election, according to talking points his campaign is using to persuade voters obtained by POLITICO.
The script instructs Sanders volunteers to tell voters leaning toward the Massachusetts senator that the “people who support her are highly-educated, more affluent people who are going to show up and vote Democratic no matter what” and that “[s]he’s bringing no new bases into the Democratic Party.”
Neither is Bernie, who strictly appeals to Amherst students and tenured Stalinist professors who believe Communism was never truly practiced. The same demo as Warren.
But with voting now just weeks away, the competition between the two is intensifying. The marquee Iowa Poll released Friday had Sanders in first at 20 percent, with Warren trailing narrowly behind in second place at 17 percent.
“We were told never to go negative or contrast with other candidates,” a person close to Sanders’ campaign told POLITICO. “Bernie would let us know when it was O.K.. So if that’s happening, he’s aware.”
And, as usual, Bernie is a coward about it.
