California’s real capital isn’t Sacramento, it’s San Francisco. The power that dominates the state and the country for that matter comes out of the Bay Area. And so why not go full French Laundry by exempting San Francisco from California’s new mask mandate.
San Francisco offices and gyms where everyone is fully vaccinated will not need to return to masking, after California on Tuesday clarified where its new, universal face mask rule applies, granting the city a reprieve.
Why expect the ruling class to live by the same rules as the ruled?
“This refinement acknowledges the hard work of the people of San Francisco throughout the pandemic, including the ways in which we have maintained reasonable protections heading into the holiday season,” San Francisco’s Department of Public Health said in a statement.
No one else has worked hard. Just San Fran.
It was not immediately clear on Tuesday night which other counties the state might also grant exemptions to, including Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa counties, but San Francisco officials believed that some other counties would also be included in the exemptions. Marin had lifted most indoor masking requirements for vaccinated people, and Contra Costa County had lifted the requirements for offices and gyms where people were fully vaccinated.
The new state rule, which will require all Californians to wear masks indoors starting Wednesday until Jan. 15, came as officials braced for a winter surge…
A state rule that doesn’t apply to the places where the power behind the state lies.
