Senator Ted Cruz is blocking Biden’s nominees over the Russian pipeline and the effort to force Egypt to free Muslim Brotherhood Jihadists. Manchin and Sinema have been holding Biden’s spending bill hostage. And, in a less watched development, the Biden administration has been struggling to make Rahm Emanuel (yes him) the ambassador to Japan.
It’s a nomination that makes Obama’s decision to inflict Princess Caroline on the Japanese seems almost respectful. There are many words that can be used to describe Rahm, “diplomatic” really isn’t one of them.
It’s late 2021 and the Biden administration is still struggling with fellow Democrats to repay favors. Neera Tanden’s nomination failed due to fellow Democrats forcing Biden to buy her off with a different role. And now Senate Democrats are going to block Rahm’s nomination forcing Biden to rely on Republicans which will likely involve some sort of behind-the-scenes deals.
It’s a humiliation and a sign of just how broken the Democrats are.
The official reasons for blocking Rahm’s nomination are predictably stupid and fake.
Senator Jeff Merkley’s statement claims “Black Lives Matter. Here in the halls of Congress, it is important that we not just speak and believe these words, but put them into action in the decisions we make. I have carefully considered Mayor Emanuel’s record—and the input of civil rights leaders, criminal justice experts, and local elected officials who have reached out to the Senate to weigh in—and I have reached the decision that I cannot support his nomination to serve as a U.S. Ambassador.”
We wouldn’t want Rahm shooting any black people in Japan.
The likely real issues involve behind-the-scenes feuds and shenanigans of the kind that convulse the seemingly united Dems.
This is why Biden is having so much trouble getting anything through Congress. The part is in a state of civil war, largely unacknowledged, and its majority and the precarious nature of it, has only sharpened the stakes while making them very petty.
