Partisan pro-Israel groups have been accused of being rubber stamps, but the Republican Jewish Coalition hasn’t endorsed any of the handful of blatantly anti-Israel GOP House members, it hasn’t spoken out against them, but it certainly hasn’t spoken out for them. The Democratic Majority for Israel was supposed to go beyond the Jewish Dems group in actually mobilizing Democrat support for Israel. Instead it’s loudly backing Warnock who is about as anti-Israel as it gets.
Warnock has called Israel an apartheid state, he’s accused the Jewish State of randomly killing innocent people, and, as recently as 2016, compared Netanyahu to George Wallace. This is ugly and destructive stuff. And if DMI didn’t want to stand up against Warnock, it could have at least stayed out of it. Instead DMI enthusiastically endorsed a candidate who has the ugliest views of Israel this side of Omar or Tlaib.
DMI endorsed Warnock and is raising money for him. Again, it didn’t need to do this.
It should also go without saying that DMI endorsed Jon Ossoff, an anti-Israel candidate tied to J Street and Al Jazeera. But that’s par for the course with DMI repeatedly overlapping with J Street. Still endorsing someone who hates Israel as much as Warnock does is a gamechanger that takes whatever credbility DMI had and sets it on fire. Warnock has made his position on Israel clear, repeatedly, not just opposing the Jewish State, but racializing his hostility.
That’s exactly the kind of thing that DMI was supposed to be there to fight. Instead DMI has offered Warnock a shiny gold rubber stamp.
