The #resistance is getting crazier every day.
Now it’s moved on to fighting President Trump by trying to eliminate double jeopardy at the state level. This neatly fits in with their pattern of embracing secessionism in the states they control after losing the Federal government. But this one is especially crazy and stupid.
Statement By Attorney General Barbara Underwood On President Trump’s Pardon Of Dinesh D’Souza
“President Trump’s latest pardon makes crystal clear his willingness to use his pardon power to thwart the cause of justice, rather than advance it. By pardoning Dinesh D’Souza, President Trump is undermining the rule of law by pardoning a political supporter who is an unapologetic convicted felon. First it was Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Then it was Scooter Libby. Now it’s Dinesh D’Souza. We can’t afford to wait to see who will be next. Lawmakers must act now to close New York’s double jeopardy loophole and ensure that anyone who evades federal justice by virtue of a politically expedient pardon can be held accountable if they violate New York law.”
In April, the Attorney General’s office sent a letter to state lawmakers urging them to close a loophole in New York’s double jeopardy law. Closing the loophole would ensure that individuals who broke New York law could not evade accountability for any state crimes as a result of a strategically-timed pardon by the president.
By Attorney General, she means Eric Schneiderman, her recent predecessor, who had to resign after being accused of abusing and choking women. Barbara seems less worried about than D’Souza getting pardoned.
Double jeopardy isn’t a loophole. Until recently, Democrats would have fought to the death for it. It is really worth trashing it at the state level to stop Trump’s pardons?
Well yes, because they’re worried that Trump might pardon somebody like Michael Cohen. And resistance comes before civil rights. Even though the major victims of such a move would be the types of drug dealers and criminals that Dems in the White House like pardoning.
