Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued an official Dear Colleague letter on returning to the House to take up a supposed crisis involving the Postal Service.
The Democrat Speaker’s letter contains numerous false statements even in its first sentence.
Dear Democratic Colleague,
The Postal Service is a pillar of our democracy, enshrined in the Constitution and essential for providing critical services: delivering prescriptions, Social Security benefits, paychecks, tax returns and absentee ballots to millions of Americans, including in our most remote communities.
1. America is a Republic, not a Democracy. The Postal Service is not a pillar of either democracy or republicanism. It is a means of delivering packages and the mail that dates from a period when there was no easily available and coordinated national means of doing so.
2. The Postal Service is not “enshrined” in the Constitution. It’s mentioned there and it allows for post roads. Pelosi does not seem very interested in post roads.
The Constitution mentions the Postal Service in order to list it as one of the legitimate functions of the federal government. Democrats believe that the federal government should do everything. Meaning that ship has sailed.
3. The Postal Service does not deliver Social Security checks. This is a false statement that Pelosi was already called out for and decided to substitute the more nebulous “benefits”, meaning information about benefits, which is not a critical service, or a misleading way to suggest checks without actually saying it.
If Speaker Pelosi is however truly concerned about preserving the Postal Service’s function of delivering benefit letters, paychecks, and tax returns, she and her fellow Democrats should not try to overload it by running a giant election scam through the system.
“Alarmingly, across the nation, we see the devastating effects of the President’s campaign to sabotage the election by manipulating the Postal Service to disenfranchise voters.”
4. Pelosi does not state what “devastating effects” can be seen. That’s because there aren’t any. The Postal Service has dispensed with some high-ranking executives and a few deliveries have allegedly been slowed down by several days to save money.
5. The election isn’t being sabotaged. Conducting the election through the Postal Service would sabotage both it and the election.
6. Voters remain enfranchised. The franchise is measured by the right to cast a ballot, not by automatically sending everyone ballots, as Pelosi and her colleagues wish.
” Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, one of the top Trump mega-donors, has proven a complicit crony as he continues to push forward sweeping new operational changes that degrade postal service, delay the mail, and – according to the Postal Service itself – threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion.”
7. The Postal Service was dysfunctional long before President Trump took office. At no point in the last generation could it have reliably served as an electoral delivery system for hundreds of millions of people.
“These delays also threaten the health and economic security of the American people by delaying delivery of life-saving medicines and payments.”
8. The delays can hold up mail for a day or two. People don’t receive life-saving medications in the mail at the last minute. The Postal Service was never a good vehicle for such a system. Many people, including veterans, receive prescriptions by mail. But that’s a package delivery system. And there are multiple package delivery options.
“Lives, livelihoods and the life of our American Democracy are under threat from the President. “
9. Neither lives nor livelihoods are under threat. Except perhaps the livelihoods of some top Postal Service executives who would be able to find other employment.
“To save the Postal Service, I am also calling upon Members to participate in a Day of Action on Tuesday by appearing at a Post Office in their districts for a press event. In a time of a pandemic, the Postal Service is Election Central. Americans should not have to choose between their health and their vote.”
This is not a false statement, but Speaker Pelosi is claiming that voting in person is too dangerous, and then urging Democrat officials to hold unnecessary in-person press events at a Post Office, which unnecessarily risks spreading the virus for a publicity stunt.
