“You had one job,” is often the refrain after a natural disaster. And FEMA is terrible at post-disaster responses. Unlike the Red Cross, it doesn’t even have the excuse that its only real purpose is fundraising off disasters while doing nothing about them.
But FEMA’s primary role is in theory disaster preparedness. It wasn’t much good at that even before the mandate of pushing global warming into everything skewed its predictions, recommendations and warnings so badly as to make them mostly useless.
After the Texas floods, liberals rushed to blame Trump administration cuts for the disaster. The plan to shutter FEMA was an immediate target, but as even the New York Times shows, FEMA was the problem, not the solution.
In the years before floodwaters killed more than two dozen people at Camp Mystic in Texas, regulators approved a series of appeals that removed many of the camp’s buildings from official federal flood zones, records show…
In a statement, FEMA said that the flood maps “are not predictions of where it will flood” and cautioned people not to assume that properties located outside a FEMA flood zone would be safe from flooding.
“Flood maps are snapshots in time designed to show minimum standards for floodplain management and the highest risk areas for flood insurance,” the agency wrote. “Floods don’t follow lines on a map.”
That of course is true. Floods don’t follow a map. So how much use are the maps? And how much use is FEMA?
Psychologically people are prone to being unprepared for flash floods for some reason. I always try to calculate the probability of flash flooding in my areas.
Yeah, they’re like tornados. You have to listen to the tornado warnings in the middle of the night in Nebraska. Those blaring alarms used to scare the shit out of me. What was I going to do? Take my son and squat in my bathtub? Fuck that shit.
Fuck tornados. CA has enough natural disasters. Getting swirled up in a Mid-West tornado is not on my list of things to do.
It becomes more understandable when you look at this video. The Kerrville area of Texas experienced a 100-year-flood over 4th of July. This video that shows the “wall of water” coming down the river from Kerrville through a little town called Center Point. You can see the almost dry creek bed at the beginning of the video. The videographer obviously wanted to record the wall of water and ensuing meteoric rise and overflowing banks.
Yes, I saw that on T.V. It was crazy.
I don’t think that can happen here in San Jose, even though there at least three rivers here. Coyote creek flooded about eight years back and displaced a bunch of home owners. That was fucked up. The local government could’ve prevented it but they’re D-Bags so public service isn’t exactly a priority for them.

Those people where fucked. I heard it reported that the flood started at 4 or 5 at night. Normal people are asleep then.
Who could prepare for a disaster like that? I feel sorry for those people. KIDS died.
Algo (and whoever at FPM is doing the moderating), I found the video explaining human unpreparedness on Youtube, which I think will translate through the posting process. The video is a continuous uninterrupted shot from dry creek bed to the bridge moving into to the danger of washing out.

I thought President Trump disbanded FEMA? It’s appalling what FEMA didn’t do starting in Palestine, OH to the Maui fires, to the hurricane victims in the SE states. the Pacific Palisades and other LA County cities fires!
If FEMA is still in operation it should either be scrapped and something else in it’s place or seriously rehabbed so victims are helped – FEMA has been a money laundering racket since inception 2005 for Hurricane Katrina – This is what a crooked POTUS does – create and agency and the crooks flood in without oversight! FEMA was created in ‘05?
FEMA was created in 1978 by Jimmy Carter.
In western NC FEMA personnel were encouraged to skip over and ignore assistance requests from suspected Trump supporters. FEMA could be rolled into the Department of the Interior and have about 50 full time employees who primarily just disburse funds to real disaster response organizations like Samaritan’s Purse, the Cajun Navy, the Amish, local militia, local construction companies, Hal down the street with a backhoe, his son Jimmy who has a 20″ Husqvarna and my Aunt Donna who has enough mason jars full of preserves to feed a town of 30,000 for 6 weeks.
Unfortunately, human nature tends to push responsibilities ever upward. From the individual, to the family, from the family to the neighbors, from the neighbors to the community, from the community to the city, from the city to the county, from the county to the state and ever upward until to the federal government. The locals now have too few responsibilities and would do them well if they had more. And the feds have waaaaay too many and don’t do them well at all.. The predominant mentality is to pass the buck upward. It is easier but with poor results.
Climate Change is the ultimate “get out of jail free” card for state and local governments who refuse to upgrade their infrastructure or prepare for any future disaster.
Because “How can we be blamed for Climate Change!”
Flash Floods can happen during a Thunderstorm in low-lying areas Gullies and other places and they have nothing to do with Global Warming/Climate Change
At some point we’ll have to resort to COMMON SENSE! So many areas of Texas are dry and when inundated with heavy rains they experience flash floods! I watched a video that showed the terrain and the “feeder” streams for the area. THAT should be the common sense to estimate where and when a flash flood would be possible or devastating! Local knowledge should also be common sense! Listen to people who have lived there – not people pushing political agendas in DC!
I live in this area, we are fortunate to be about 1,500 ft up on a hillside so are unaffected, but this was not a natural event like the media and all the meteorologists are claiming . The storm dropped the equivalent of 1.5 million Olympic swimming pools onto the area worth of water (according to meteorologist Chris Nunnely). The waters rose 26 ft in 25 minutes I believe… at 3am.
Not sure if you’ve seen their lock-step verbiage that “cloud seeding didn’t cause this!”
One meteorologist even made a statement like that shouting in all caps on his facebook (so emotional and irrational and unprofessional).
Now they’re having experts on to explain to us why it wasn’t cloud seeding.
Meanwhile, I finally found public records of the flight logs and 3 companies (not Rainmaker the only one in the news for it right now) all cloud seeded over the flood area for 30 days straight before the floods happened. This would have saturated the ground to the point where it would have caused major runoff and flooding when the storm did come. So how can they claim the cloud seeding didn’t affect it?

FEMA flood plane maps define boundaries for flood insurance premiums.
The problem isn’t so much FEMA. Although, FEMAs flood zone maps are primarily designed to sell Flood Insurance.
The real problem is preparedness. No preparedness is ever done for the 50, 100 year event. It is not even done in Southern Cities where a snow event may only happen ever 3-5 years. So when this does happen, they are completely “unprepared”.
Today, these municipalities, many run my Democrats have their “go to” excuse when it comes to these situations that they are unprepared to deal with, Climate Change! How could they be blamed for not being prepared for such and unpredictable thing as Climate Change!
We saw this a few years ago when a hurricane came up the east coast and hit NYC, the NYC sewer system, a system that had been neglected for many decades, was completely overwhelmed. The 1st reaction of local authorities was to decry “climate change” and how could they be blamed for that!
Areas that experience regular flooding have done nothing at all to control flooding. Flood control seems to be a lost art in modern times. When anyone starts to seriously talk about it, the Enviro-Nazis bring out their army of lawyers and litigate any projects into extinction. Then there are the nimby crows who don’t want their precious river fronts obstructed by levies and other measure but will cry for government help when their properties are destroyed.
Another big issue is that there are no “lessons learned” when these events happen. They just cry for more federal finding “because climate change” and that money gets wasted or stolen. The exception to this rule was Florida after Andrew. When Insurance carriers threatened to all pull out of the state if something was not done, Florida instituted stricter building codes so that Florida structures could withstand stronger and stronger winds, plus many other regulations and programs to survive the regular occurrence of hurricanes here.
The problem with flooding is that the feds subsidize flood insurance, they are not going to impose regulations and force states to implement flood controls. Because the last thing any government program would ever do is implement procedures and programs that may someday make it become obsolete!
