The shooting of Makhia Bryant by a police officer as she was charging in to stab another teenage girl has been shoved into the usual false pipelines of race and police defunding. Bryant was dubbed a child, and a warm-hearted honor student. Much as George Floyd was called a gentle giant.
We’re all more than the sum of our worst and best moments, but that’s neither here nor there. Hitler was an aspiring artist who really loved his dog. Most people have some good qualities. It doesn’t change the destructive problem of their bad ones.
The discussion over Bryant’s shooting keeps coming down to “was there another way”.
Could the cop have shot at her legs or grappled with her. Neither are realistic options for anyone who gets their reality from the real world, not Netflix. But there was another way long before the shooting and the media has very little interest in looking at her life, or at the lives of George Floyd through any lens other than the familiar 1619 Project in which all the social ills date back to systemic racism, whiteness, and slavery in America.
The obvious question about a teenage girl attacking with a knife would be why. But questions like ‘why’ are no longer asked.
Nor is there any interest in why Makhia Bryant was living in a foster home or why things were so violent. The answer is probably systemic racism after all.
And that’s true of most police shootings whose common denominators are not race, but most often social ills.
We don’t talk about the broken family even though it’s as endemic to a life of crime as gang tattoos. Systemic racism explains everything and thus explains nothing. Critical race theory explains that Makhia Bryant went on a stabbing spree because of the 1619 Project. The actual individual why of it doesn’t matter.
Family is a root cause, but it’s also a canary in the coal mine. The collapse of family structures is also a civilizational collapse. A multi-generational community without families is not a functioning community. It’s a breeding ground for lawlessness, violence, and purposeless self-destruction.
It doesn’t take a village to raise a child. Hillary always had it backward. It takes a family raising a child to make a village.
Makhia Bryant is what happened to the children when the Left destroyed the family and took the village with it.
