The rate and degree to which lefties and their media outlets are normalizing bigotry has no precedent in generations.
There is absolutely no black racism that the media won’t defend and excuse. This bizarre New York Times article, “Hebrew Israelites See Divine Intervention in Lincoln Memorial Confrontation” is the latest and worst example.
There’s no way that the Times would have run a sympathetic pastel toned piece like this on white nationalist groups.
The most basic thing to do is to just quote the SPLC’s own description of the Hebrew Israelites.
General Mayakaahla Ka is shouting at a college-aged Jewish kid outside the Market East Station in downtown Philadelphia. He and three other extremist Hebrew Israelite preachers, all wearing the Israelite School insignia of two swords crossed through a Star of David, berate their victim until he begins to weep. The altercation is part of an Israelite School recruiting video that began circulating this spring and has since been viewed more than 73,000 times.
“Are you saying the Holocaust is a joke?” the Jewish man asks.
“It’s a joke!” the “general” responds. “The Holocaust is a damn joke! Heil Hitler!”
Mobile clusters of up to a dozen extremist Hebrew Israelite street preachers, known in the movement as “camps,” have become a common presence at busy intersections, plazas and public transportation centers in large American cities, especially in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., as well as Venice, Calif. The camps are often remarkably aggressive and intimidating, railing against “white devils” and calling for death for Jews and gay men and lesbians.
Extremist Hebrew Israelites have a long, strange list of enemies. At the top of the list are white people, who they preach are descended from a race of red, hairy beings, known as Edomites, who were spawned by Esau, the twin brother of Jacob (later known as Israel) in the Old Testament. Equally hated are “fraudulent” Jews, “the synagogue of Satan.” They’re closely followed in no particular order by Asians, promiscuous black women, abortionists, continental Africans (who, according to the extremist Israelites, sold the lost tribes of Israel, who were black, to European slave traders), and gay people, who according to extremist Israelites should all be put to death. (In December 2006, three gay men who were assaulted inside an Atlanta nightclub identified their attackers as Hebrew Israelites; no arrests were made).
Can the New York Times defend this? It can, and John Eligon of the Times, does.
Since the issue at stake is the media’s own lies about the Covington Catholic boys, and the confrontation which actually resulted from hateful harassment by the Black Israelites, the New York Times does its best to whitewash the Black Israelites.
They are sidewalk ministers who use confrontation as their gospel.
Hebrew Israelites practice a theology that says God’s chosen ones — black, Hispanic and Native American people — have strayed and need to be led back to righteousness.
So they post up on street corners in big cities, usually in predominantly black communities, wearing flashy garb — purple shirts or black robes, for instance. They shout, use blunt and sometimes offensive language, and gamely engage in arguments aimed at drawing listeners near.
This could easily be a description of God Hates Fags. But such a story would be inconceivable. And yet the exact same behavior practiced by a black nationalist hate group gets a New York Times tounge bath.
The Times doesn’t bother listing any of the racist and sexual slurs that the Hebrew Israelites threw at the boys.
Provocation is their outreach method of choice. And provoke they did.
It’s also God Hates Fags’ outreach method of choice. That of the Nazis and the KKK.
They group people instead based on what they call nations, believing that there are 12 tribes among God’s chosen people. White people are not among those tribes, they believe, and will therefore be servants when Christ returns to Earth.
They believe that white people will be enslaved. The New York Times chooses to soft pedal those views and to call them servants, not slaves.
If their interaction with the Catholic students seemed like an expression of bigotry toward white people, some of their most vile language is reserved for black people in the communities where they preach.
That, in part, is because they are trying to get through to them, Mr. Banyamyan said. He described it like tough love — calling out black people to try to get them to turn their lives around. “Spare nobody’s feelings,” is a biblical passage he falls back on.
“We use certain tactics,” he said, adding that if you confront passers-by softly, “they don’t respect you.”
This is the sort of confrontation that the New York Times’ new favorite hate group specializes in. The following passages are from the SPLC, not the Times.
The vision of Grant and his fellow Hebrew Israelite hard-liners — an imminent and bloody demise for whites and other enemies at the hands of a vengeful returning Christ — is well captured in a scene from a 2007 documentary. In one scene from “The Gods of Times Square,” an extremist Hebrew Israelite preacher delivers a sermon with his foot planted on the back of a white man laying flat on the sidewalk, arms splayed at his sides. A second preacher approaches the camera.
“White boy, you’re next,” he warns. “All you white people get ready for war. We’re coming for you, white boys. Negroes are the real Jews. Get ready for war
The New York Times publishes this whitewashing of the hate group verbatim while adopting the spin.
The Times does not mention any of the hateful incidents involving the hate group in anything except the vaguest tones.
Whatever tensions are sparked by Hebrew Israelite teaching, some adherents chalk that up to people being unwilling to accept uncomfortable doctrine.
Also shouting slurs at random people.
To many black people, Hebrew Israelites are a harmless part of their communities, said Todd Boyd, a professor of race and pop culture at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, one of many cities where the group can be seen working the streets. More alarming to many African Americans, he said, is “seeing a white guy in a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat.”
That’s how the Times wraps its whitewash of an ugly hate group.
