Americans expected Osama bin Laden to be found in a cave in Afghanistan. In reality, he was living comfortably in a military town in Pakistan under the protection of local authorities. Similarly, Israeli hostages, including the four who were last rescued, have come home telling stories of being kept captive in ‘civilian’ households.
In both cases we fundamentally misunderstood what Islamic terrorism is. It’s not a “fringe group of extremists”, as politicians and the media describe it, but an ethnic and religious movement. The religious values of Islamic terrorists are universally shared by the vast majority of Muslims, while the ethnic ones ground Islamic warfare in the interests of specific clans and families.
Hamas is an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood and has a widespread base of support across the Muslim world which is dotted with branches of the Brotherhood, but its ethnic power base is also grounded in the key clans and families that control Gaza. That is why Hamas still retains the support of the majority of the Muslim colonists currently occupying Gaza. It’s also why those same ‘civilians’ held Israeli hostages prisoner and could be trusted not to inform on them.
The latest Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research poll shows that 71% of Gazans support the Hamas atrocities of Oct 7 and 56% expect Hamas to win the war. 62% in Gaza are happy with the performance of Hamas during the war and 59% want Hamas to stay in power.
That’s because they are Hamas and the terror group is also them.
The ‘Palestinian’ myth is that the Muslim colonists occupying parts of Israel are the ‘indigenous’ people. The reality is that they were Arab settlers who arrived with and after the Islamic conquest of Israel. Some, like the notorious Husayini clan, which produced Hitler’s Mufti, were relatively recent arrivals. The most powerful and wealthiest of these large families took control of urban areas, as the Husayinis tried to do in Jerusalem, and became a vital part of the Ottoman feudal order serving as mayors and muftis. When the Ottomans were defeated, the clans fought to reclaim their power with movements like the Muslim Brotherhood also known as Hamas.
Hamas is an ideological Islamist movement, but its control over Gaza depends on these large families. That’s why the idea that most people have that Hamas is a fanatical movement that exists apart from ordinary people and can be fought and defeated apart from them is wrong.
That’s also why so few of the hostages have been rescued. Like the last four, the hostages were largely dispersed among ‘civilian’ clan families across neighborhoods controlled by them. These families are formally civilian households, but many of their members are affiliated with Hamas. Rather than being an army whose members belong foremost to Hamas, they are more like the mafia and belong foremost to their extended clan, and choose to lend their support to Hamas.
It’s not just that Hamas uses human shields, which it certainly does, it’s that its infrastructure depends on clans whose adults provide fighters and whose women and children act as human shields for the greater glory of the clan and for Islam. The same clans that will kill teenage girls for violating family honor will also serve up even younger children as human shields for honor.
There is no way for Israel to rescue its hostages without going into dense neighborhoods under the control of the clans to get them out. And that will lead to firefights and ‘Black Hawk Down’ moments. Clan members, who never identify themselves as such, will cry that they were massacred. And foreign leaders and the media will condemn the deaths of ‘civilians’.
Defeating Hamas without civilian casualties is impossible because the Islamic terrorist group not only operates among civilians, but is rooted in the society of Gaza. The clans that run Gaza, that provide the manpower that controls UNRWA institutions, and that are the mainstays of Hamas are also the large families that dominate the businesses, cultural and religious life in Gaza.
There’s no meaningful distinction between civilians and Hamas. Some clans reject Hamas authority and Israel has tried to solicit some of them to run Gaza. For now with few results. The United States strategy in Afghanistan and Iraq had similarly depended on swaying certain clans, elders and warlords into abandoning Al Qaeda or the Taliban with very temporary success.
Eventually the Taliban or Al Qaeda, rebranded as ISIS, returned. And some of the same men we had armed and trained, turned their guns on us. That is an almost inevitable outcome in Counterinsurgency or COIN. When bringing democracy to the Muslim world fails, Westerners begin competing with Jihadists for the support of the clans only to be stabbed in the back.
The Jihadists have the Koran on their side. To Muslims, their terrorism will always be more righteous than our fumbling efforts to avoid civilian casualties and collateral damage. Appealing to moderates or promising a better life will not win their support. On the contrary, it only infuriates the Imams in their mosques and the influential clan leaders into opposing us.
Instead we must reckon with the reality that there are few civilians in Gaza or in the Muslim world. And those who legitimately are civilians should be measured by their deeds, not their clothing. In a culture where terrorists in the field don’t wear uniforms, where large families have sizable stocks of weapons and children are taught to kill and die, the externals don’t matter.
There are no civilians in Gaza. The vast majority of the population supports Hamas or some Islamic terrorist movement. Only a tiny minority opposes Islamic terrorism and wants peace.
The distinction is not between soldiers, terrorists and civilians, but enemies and non-combatants. Israel and Western nations should stop thinking about civilians, a concept that does not apply in a battlespace where terrorists wear street clothes and entire neighborhoods are controlled by clans that hide hostages in plain sight, and think about enemies and neutrals.
An enemy is anyone, regardless of clothing or sex, who is aligned with Islamic terrorists.
Every poll continues to show that the vast majority of those in Gaza are aligned with the enemy. And if that were not the case, the war would have long since ended once locals informed the authorities of where the hostages are and where the remaining Hamas terrorists are set up.
Israel is not just at war with an organization, but with an enemy culture. As is most of the world whether it chooses to admit it or not. The war is not defined by what they wear, but what they think. As long as human shields, female suicide bombers and child soldiers abound, the war cannot be fought by treating civilians as noncombatants while hunting elusive terrorists.
The only way to defeat an enemy is to fight him as he is, not as we would like him to be.
It would be a far cleaner and neater war if Islamic terrorists fought like conventional armies. They do not. And it is time to fight them on their own terms instead.
Hamas can’t be defeated by waiting until its terrorists take off their civilian clothes and put on uniforms. Hamas are the civilians. They are the ones holding the hostages. The only way to free the hostages and defeat the terrorists is to destroy the terror culture in whatever form it takes.
Daniel Greenfield – in parts of this essay, you speak my thoughts. From other parts, I have learned some things I didn’t know. What I am sure of is that Islam, in today’s world, is the source of great evil.
Just the notion of “klans and families” wielding terrible power gives one the willies. I know we have our own version of that in the West, but it just sounds so–medieval. And feudal.
Among Arabs, loyalty is based on tribe, family, and clan. An Arab ruler will fill important positions with clan members.
Which is another reason Arab militaries are deeply flawed. Generals are either members of the royal family. And if they’re not, as in Egypt, they stage a coup.
They end up having to bring in Westerners to run key parts of their industries because they can’t trust members of outside families and their own people are inept.
Bearing in mind that Saddam and still living, Assad, has Christians working in their households since they can’t trust Muslims.

An excellent summation of the Muslim Arab culture and mindset. Defeating Hamas is actually defeating Islam which primarily means denying the Arab Klan the land base from whence it attacks. Gaza must be expunged of it Muslim conquerors and be returned to Nature.

I encountered this clan loyalty while living in the arab world. It runs through Christian arabs too, not just moslems. But as Robert Spencer points out (when he isn’t avoiding being murdered by moslems), the Koran blesses and legitimizes the worst tendencies of humanity. Islam is not a religion. It is an all-consuming cult that colors and controls ALL aspects of life. The only way to bring peace is by the sword, as Islam candidly admits As long as our twinkle-toes politicians pretend this is Junior UN operating by polite and agreed-to rules and not a savage fight to the death, we are doomed. Exactly. My own grandson (college graduate) claimed to me that Buddhism was a philosophy, not a religion. So I pointed out that Buddhists have temples, priestly monks, a belief system that incorporates a supernatural being to whom they offer votive gifts and prayers requesting favors, and a promise of reincarnation—a form of eternal life. They believe certain deeds gets them favor with that supernatural being and bad deeds gets them “bad karma.” They have rites and rituals that involve beads, chants, candles, and bowing before a representative idol of their supernatural being to whom they pray with ritualistic actions. So I asked him, in light of the commonalities with every other religion, what sets Buddhism apart that makes it “not a religion”? His answer? “……..Crickets.”
Yes, it’s a somewhat absurd argument. I would also point out that a lot of leftist politics is really religion. It has sin, belief in a right side of history, and a conviction that the right people will be saved. There are mysteries, paradoxes and all sorts of cultlike elements.

In 1948, the United Nations Genocide Convention defined genocide as any of five “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”. These five acts were: killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group. Victims are targeted because of their real or perceived membership of a group, not randomly.

However, the collaboration between Iran and al Qaeda goes back to terrorist training camps shared with Hizbollah in Sudan, to joint jihadist operations like Khobar Towers and the embassy attacks in East Africa. Iran facilitated transportation for the 9/11 hijackers and took in or aided many al Qaeda fighters fleeing Afghanistan. Iran may have even been involved in the planning, through Imad Mughniyeh.

A week is a ‘shavua’ The hebrew word for ‘oath’ is also ‘shavuah‘, the same letters but with an added letter ‘hey’ at the end. ‘Hey’ can refer to the name of God. So what’s the connection between a week, an oath and God?
God made an eternal oath, from week to week, an eternal cycle of six days and the Sabbath, an eternal oath with the nation of Israel to remember and observe the 613 laws, precepts and statutes of Torah, ten of which, the Ten Commandments, will be read tomorrow in synagogues throughout the world, in Israel and in Gaza, forever a part of the promised land.

While I agree with the intention of this article, I have to say the writing is sloppy. Here are the first sentences of consecutive paragraphs:

Again, I agree with Greenfield’s main point. But this kind of writing doesn’t help.
That is flat out contradictory. “Few” doesn’t mean “none”.
Emerges the pedant even if I agree mostly.
There are always some muslims (always seem to be males as how often do we see such decency from their women? I am yet to meet one who was both affable and fluent in my home language)) who seem to be “decent” and who often try to be, especially in the west. But if ordered to kill their best friend or wife/daughter by their imam or be “excommunicated” islam wise via public shaming, do not kid yourself that it is impossible. (PS the sentence structure above should make you choke : ))
You cannot really be muslim and NOT want to kill, rape and enslave non muslims. The fact that you do not, is not an assessment of your decency as your role may simply be the have 8 children or to infiltrate the health bureaucracies to dish out disability pensions to fit young men or to simply work as a doctor who seems to have a higher than usual loss rate.

The conclusion of the article therefore explains why “civilians” is not a meaningful metric to use.

Somehow, I was reminded of African Americans and the O.J. trial. The prosecution ALTRUISTICALLY, self-sacrificially, and therefore as an act of self-sabotage, decided to hold the trial not in rich, white, Santa Monica where the crime occurred, but in downtown Los Angeles, a district where more African Americans could be found for the jury — in order to be seen as altruistically decent and fair.
It was clear as day that O.J. was guilty as sin, but the predominantly black jury found him innocent. The African American tribe celebrated in the streets just as the Muslim tribe celebrated 9/11 from the rooftops of New Jersey.
Almost certainly the African Americans on the jury thought he was guilty, but they found him innocent because O.J. was one of them, one of their tribe, one of their clan, and the enemy was the white tribe, the white clan. Tribalism was much more important than the facts of reality, much more important than objectivity.

I got into this after 9/11 when America was attacked. Not when Israel was.

Do you believe both paragraphs are true? 29% of Gazans not supporting the Oct 7 atrocities is not a small number in the least. Not when producing articles justifying killing civilians. It is maybe much more reasonable to justify going into the stronghold of a corrupt clan and killing more indiscriminately there. But I’m not sure what is the intent of these articles I see nowadays that basically say all the ‘Palestinians’ are bad guys. Genocide? Forced relocation to somewhere else (USA being an unfortunately likely candidate).
And why does everyone always focus on them and completely ignore the bad guys in the IDF that seemed to let this attack happen, or the politicians that forbid the citizens from owning guns for self defense?

It’s not safe for anyone in Gaza to admit they don’t support Hamas. Hamas “religiously” assassinates all their critics. We had a military built for fighting other Western nations. And we’ve forgotten what our generals knew when they were fighting in places like the Philipines or the Barbary Wars about what non-Western enemies are like. Or how they think.

The Gazans voted for and still support Hamas. The Gazan “civilians” willingly participated in the atrocities of October 7 and still support and assist Hamas. I think you are ignoring that there is a “Red/Green alliance” between the Left and Islam. They are united in an effort to destroy Western civilization. If you look at the bottom of many of the professionally printed signs at the protests and encampments you will see their advertisement.
