Editor’s note: The article below is written by Tom Burbage, a Vietnam-era veteran and Naval Academy graduate who leads The Calvert Group — a military group of American heroes who are fighting the Left’s subversion of our defense forces. The Calvert Group is a key player in an effort to connect graduates of the service academies — America’s finest military veterans — to bring their clout and resources to the fight to save America. Most of our uniformed service members — and most Americans — believe in the fundamental goodness of our great country. And they want to preserve it. But fighting for what is right means first understanding the truth about what is happening.
We have the world’s most powerful military and it is an all-voluntary force. We all took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We believe in the sanctity of that oath. All of our civilian and military leaders take the same oath.
Today we are confronted with a very serious domestic enemy which, if left unchecked, will threaten our way of life and our ability to remain a beacon of freedom and a leader of the free world.
The threat has been allowed to exist in our educational systems over many years and has gained additional support and momentum with recent left-leaning media which shapes public opinion. We live in a world of social media and words with double meaning. Phrases that defined our world and that motivated young patriots to lead our volunteer military included “freedom isn’t free,” “the home of the free, because of the brave,” “heroes are forged in fire,” “this is my country,” “I’m proud to be an American” and most important of all: “God Bless America.” All of these sacred mantras have suddenly been replaced by phrases like “black lives matter,” “systemic racism” and “defund the police,” all of which have hidden meanings and exert influence on the uninformed.
The volunteer force starts with the best and brightest high school students who want to make a difference. The training ground for these patriots are the accession processes that lead to a commission. The premier institutions are the service academies. This microcosm of our society has no place for sowing seeds based in Marxist philosophy. Race-based decision making is the antithesis of unity which is the fundamental basis of good order and discipline in fighting units.
The volunteer force currently on active duty needs to maintain focus on the mission, not on the forced indoctrination into a false ideology that is contradictory to our Constitution and the oath we all took. Today our core values are being reshaped — which should be a wakeup call for all Americans who enjoy freedoms rooted in the fact that we have the strongest military in the world.
The forgotten many who form our veteran community remember why we gave our lifetimes in defense of a nation worth defending. They are alarmed at the current change in direction of our leadership, but most feel powerless to help change the dynamic.
We have spent trillions of U.S. taxpayer dollars and spilled a lot of American blood fighting Marxism around the world for the last 7 decades. Why would we want to surrender to a Marxist-based poisonous ideology that seeks to divide us and our military along classic Marxist “oppressor vs oppressed” lines from within? Why would anyone volunteer to defend a nation that is evil at its roots?
So where do we go from here? We must address issues that promote unity, not division across the full spectra of our military — beginning with our Service Academies. We must educate political and military leaders, the men and women that serve, and most importantly, the American people, of the dangers of neo-Marxism and Critical Race Theory ideology.
We are the majority but we don’t have the megaphone, and we need to find a way to get our nation back.
