When a Republican politician criticises the media, immediately we are deluged with hysterical media claims that its hacks are an oppressed minority. There are editorials warning that America is just one step away from turning into Hungary. And then possibly North Korea or Mordor.
Reporters will be rounded up any minute now and forced to chant patriotic slogans all day long.
And then there’s the lack of interest when a Democrat pol best known for wearing funny hats says something truly creepy. Like this.
Democrat Rep. Frederica Wilson said people who are “making fun” of members of Congress online should be “prosecuted.”
The Florida congresswoman made the comments on Tuesday outside of the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children in her home state.
“Those people who are online making fun of members of Congress are a disgrace, and there is no need for anyone to think that is unacceptable [sic],” Wilson said.
“We’re gonna shut them down and work with whoever it is to shut them down, and they should be prosecuted,” she added. “You cannot intimidate members of Congress, frighten members of Congress. It is against the law, and it’s a shame in this United States of America.”
If Rep. Wilson doesn’t want to made fun of, maybe she should stop wearing goofy hats in public.
Wilson is obviously an idiot. Not because she wants to prosecute people, but because she actually said it in public.
But Rep. Wilson knows quite well that the media will shrug and ignore the story. If Trump had suggested prosecuting people who make fun of him, we’d be in a 24/7 cycle complete with John Oliver delivering a viral lecture on the freedoms of the Bill of Rights.
But, like the Clinton rope line, this isn’t an issue. No First Amendment problem to be seen with a government official threatening to prosecute critics.
