The stories we tell are about ourselves.
That’s why reporting is not supposed to be narrative. Unfortunately it became narrative. And so the media, aside from its usual political agendas, puts itself at the center of every story. It is going out there and telling these stories. It is being persecuted by President Trump.
The Yamiche Alcindor nonsense is one of the latest media figureheads, Jim Acosta, April Ryan, etc… who become the embodiments of corporate press freedom by throwing a press conference tantrum, and then doing a victory lap of the rest of the media to celebrate.
This usual tiresome circus is completely out of place during a pandemic when no one outside the media views the media as the story.
And yet, like any narcissist, the only story that the media can tell is self-reflective. All it can do is continue to retell its own story, about its own valor and heroism, its vital importance to society, while a bored and disgusted public rolls its eyes at this narcissistic tantrum.
